We have studied the chart of intermediary metabolism for reductive
autotrophs in an effort to recover the earliest biochemistry from
universal features of the present day metabolic chart.  From data mining
of metabolism we work top down to certain metabolic fundamentals that
are embodied in the cofactors.  From a bottom up perspective, we arrive
at similar pathways from basic organic chemistry, suggesting the
existence of biological universals bridging both approaches.
