Adenoirus infections cannot be treated by antibiotics, even though they may resemble bacterial infections. Symptoms may be treated. Anti-viral drugs may be used. There are vaccines against several respiratory adenoviruses both in use and in preparation.

To diagnose the precise cause of the symptoms so that specific treatment can be prescribed, a physician may want to test a sample of respiratory (throat swab or nasal drippings) or conjunctival secretions, blood, urine sample or a stool specimen, depending on what condition is being considered.
